Stove Cabinet | The Advice You Need To Know

Introduction

The stove cabinet is one of the main workstations needed for your kitchens balance. A good thing to know is that you have several options when it comes to width, height, or space around the stove cabinet.

What are the 2 different kinds of  Stove Cabinet

When it comes to things you need to know about stove cabinets please keep in mind that people can be referring to one of 2 cabinet types explained below.

Above Stove Cabinet “AKA” Range or Microwave Cabinet

This Range Cabinet is mostly installed above the stove at a higher space compared to the adjacent cabinets because you want to leave space for a range vent, range microwave and especially it will help cover up any electrical outlets need for that area and will also hide the duct vent pipe needed for proper kitchen cooking ventilation.

Below Stove Cabinet “AKA” Drop In Stove Cabinet

Some kitchens do not have the Drop In Stove Cabinet and just have a regular gas or electric stove appliance with a cooking top and oven combination. New and modern kitchens now have countertop flush stoves that blend into the countertops flat surface really well and the cabinet underneath matches the rest of your kitchen so the design is not interrupted.

How to install above stove cabinet?

To install this above stove cabinet also called the range cabinet or microwave cabinet, you must find the studs in wall and use 2.5 to 3 inch pan head screws, 2 for the top and 2 for the bottom. Center the cabinet above your  stove area and decide what appliance your kitchen is designed for.

If you will use a microwave cabinet mount then you need at least 30 inches wide and 18 inches tall starting from the bottom line of the adjacent cabinets to make the bottom of your microwave begin at the same line so they all look even. It is normal for your wall stove cabinet to be up higher than your other regular kitchen cabinets.

For a range vent installation on wall stove cabinet then you can have a smaller space meaning at least 30 inches wide and the height is really home owner preference as long as you are comfortable reaching for the buttons and you have the desired clearance keep in mind if you use large pots that are really tall keep that in consideration for better clearance.

What to do with dead space beside stove cabinet?

In this case you can simply add a corner kitchen cabinet other words known as Lazy Susan Cabinet and the Peanut Cabinet. The lazy susan cabinet has a rotating round platform in the inside of cabinet and the peanut cabinet has a pull out shelf that is shaped like a peanut for easy reach of that dead space in corner.

If your stove cabinet does not allow space for a corner cabinet as mentioned then you can replace the cabinet that is next to stove cabinet in corner for a deeper cabinet that runs wider so that it allows you to use that dead space and you do not require any additional cabinet space, basically just use what you have.

What am i looking for in an over the stove cabinet

This depends on your other kitchen wall cabinets and what kind of look you are going for. If your wall cabinets are 36 inches tall and you want your over the stove cabinet to end at the same height then you will need a 30 inch by 18 inch by 12 inch wall cabinet. Unless you would like the extra storage space and better design for that range cabinet to stand out then you will go with a 24 inch cabinet tall so this will give you a 6 inch stagger up top for your crown trim to wrap around it for better aesthetics.

That being said if your wall cabinets are 42 inches tall then you will need a range cabinet that is 24 inches tall for an even finish at top. If you want to go with range that staggers 6 inches up top then you will use a 30 inch tall cabinet for better fit.

Keep in mind if you plan on using a microwave cabinet then you need to have a 15 inch deep cabinet instead of the regular 12 inch deep cabinet.

How to build a drop in stove cabinet

One of the main questions that kitchen home owners have is “What is a 30 inch stove cabinet” and how to build a drop in stove cabinet.  The answer is simple because all a 30 inch stove cabinet is a regular 30 inch sink base cabinet. The difference between the 30 inch sink base cabinet and the regular 30 inch base cabinet is that the sink base does not have a drawer so that it does not interfere with the wiring of a drop in stove or the plumbing of a sink.

You can convert a regular base cabinet into a sink or stove cabinet by simply removing the drawer and saving the face panel and reinstalling alone on the face frame of cabinet for extra space needed inside.

How to build a drop in stove cabinet

For drop in stove cabinet this just means that you need extra space on the inside of cabinet so you will have to cut into the walls of cabinets to allow for body of stove to drop into and still be supported.

The standard cut out is called a scoop cut out which means you will cut the cabinet wall sides exactly 6 inches down and 2 inches from the back and front so you will be removing 2 large rectangular pieces from the cabinet side walls.

How high is the over the stove cabinet

The over the stove cabinet is normally at 72.5 inches height.

How did you come up with that? The math is that the standard wall cabinet installation height is 54.5 inches and the space required for most above stove range areas is a height of 18 inches to allow the homeowner for an option of a microwave or ventilation range install. So 54.5 inches plus 18 inches is 72.5 inches. As a good reference you will also notice that the standard refrigerator opening is 39 inches wide and 72.5 inches tall.  This means your kitchen openings will match and give you a nice imaginary horizonal line that matches the bottom of your fridge cabinet and the bottom of the above stove cabinet.

Conclusion

So when it comes to installing stove cabinets it is a mixture of standard heights with homeowner design preference. If you wish to have a flat look across the tops of all your kitchen wall cabinets then we explained what size cabinets to use for that as well as if you are into the wall cabinets that stagger up and down in an orderly fashion then consider the taller cabinet for that unique look and added character to your kitchen.
